    Tom Scheerer Decorates

Prior to being cognizant of who Tom Scheerer was, I was pulling images of Tom Scheerer interiors from shelter magazines to inhabit my Inspiration boards and notebooks (this was way before Pinterest was born).

"Part of the alchemy is in the dynamic way that Scheerer combines classicism, old-fashioned decorating, and a clean, modernist sensibility, much as David Hicks and Billy Baldwin did in their days. Hicks and Baldwin are two of Scheerer's favorite forebears in the trade, and he's always maintained that their frank, generous books (including Billy Baldwin Decorates) taught him most of what he knows about decorating. Hicks gave him the notion that boldness can coexist with appropriateness. Baldwin made it clear that an unpretentious ease looks good on even the fanciest clients."

Scheerer's clients are affluent however one of the things I admire most about him is his ability to decorate their homes in a very polished, yet unpretentious manner. A defining moment of his career was when the home he bought in Charleston, South Carolina was photographed for House & Garden in 1997. He tastefully combined traditional and modern elements, as Scheerer gracefully does, which looked unlike anything that was being published at that time. Most people would have bought that very same house and decorated it entirely being authentic to that period. But thankfully, Tom Scheerer isn't most people! This combination of old-fashioned style with more casual, modern elements can be explained when you look to Scheerer's past. His boarding school and country club roots blended with the laid-back weekends Scheerer spent at his family's beach home are both ever present in the interiors he creates.

I love this line from the Introduction to his book describing Scheerer as "self-deprecating with aristocratic manners and a surprising grasp of street slang."

Scheerer talks about how a collection of hats grew organically under the stairs at his grandparents East Hampton's beach home, purchased in 1945, in which his family still owns today. This "seat-of-the-pants way of evoking freshness and happiness in a less than perfect situation", is something that he has carried with him and incorporated into many of the homes he has decorated over the years.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and learning more about one of my all time Design Crushes! I knew that "hats" were a bit of a signature of Scheerer's but to learn where that came from for him personally and to think about how he either consciously or unconsciously adds that detail in his designs was really interesting for me. And I am stoked to have a big, beautiful coffee table book full of his amazing interiors at my fingertips to look to next time I need a little design inspiration.

    Hunting & Fishing

Well, my version of hunting and fishing that is...combing junk stores, flea markets and antique malls! I wanted to share with you some of my recent finds from my hunting trips but I need to start by apologizing for the quality of these photos. (I desperately need a nice camera! It makes all the difference.) Hopefully I will have more after photos ASAP. I usually intend for these things to go to clients but they often end up residing with...you guessed it...moi!

Tobacco basket with a Lake City, SC label. I will probably hang it on a wall as a piece of art, much like the photo below...

And an iron gate I found in Savannah, Ga that I hope to back with an aged mirror. How fabulous, right?

An old farm spool that my carpenter is turning into one or two tables.

The Chinoiserie style dresser will be repaired, lacquered and finished off with new hardware. Love the Bentwood stool! Here it is in a room setting...

Some discounted fabric remnants that were too good to pass up...fabulous ikat print...aqua mohair...and this pink David Hicks print by Ashley Hicks is so much fun!

Great chevron trim remnants (perfect for pillows), cool shaped coral button and some fun vintage mother-of-pearl square buttons!

This Henredon parson's style table was a steal at $5 and will look great painted out but for now it lives here in on my landing...

(p.s. the "o" is actually a zero from the old Roper Hospital sign and p.p.s. the wonderful shrimp boat watercolor was created by my very talented father!)

I love the detail on the legs!

These old iron pieces have a great shape!

  • This Week I...

    This Week I...

Debuted my new blog! Woohoo! What do you think? Seriously, do you love it? Hate it? Anything that is hard to read? Missing? Annoying? Still working on some kinks but other than that...I owe a big thanks to the super talented Marina of Penny Lane Designs for being super patient with this hard to please client. I guarantee you she was cursing my name as I took away all of her creative freedom and made about 1,000 changes. Bless your heart!

Saw the empty fireplace box at my clients. Turns out that it was just an empty wooden box not really built for actual fires so tearout was fairly easy and has opened up many possibilities for this artist studio! I am hoping to convince said client to tear out the generic stock cabinetry and do some real custom built-ins, yeah, you know, the good stuff! If I had hooked up my scanner by now I would scan in the sketches.

Found out the main fabric I speced to a client for her living room is discontinued. Nooooooooooooo! (said like Monica on Friends) I haven't told her yet so she might read it here first. If so, I have't given up! If anyone has any of this or knows where I can get some or even wants to sell me their memo...PLEASE let me know!

Made a bad design decision. I know, I know...it's shocking. The grasscloth I was so excited about for a client looks awful because it had to be seamed and grasscloth being a natural material doesn't really line up perfectly. It isn't a big deal on the tighter weaves but this is a large, patterned weave and it just ain't right. So for all of you who thought I was perfect...I'm not. (I will pause for the dramatic reaction). But as I told my client...sometimes Plan B ends up being better than Plan A. Here's hoping!

Finished up some last min tasks like taking photos and pricing and uploading it all into my online shop and will debut it next week so get out your wallets and prepare to shop!

    Have a great weekend!!!
