I Have Got To Get An iPhone!

I am still kicking myself for getting bamboozled into buying a (very expensive) Treo three days before the iPhone debuted (for less than the Treo mind you). Seriously? Ugh. And the technology on the iPhone keeps getting cooler and cooler further enticing me into Apple's web...

Most designers would agree that the interior design industry, as a whole, is a little behind the times (technologically speaking). I like to think that this is because design is such a tactile and emotional experience so it can be hard to capture the same feelings via a monitor. I know that I prefer to see, touch and feel items before recommending them to a client. Even with AutoCAD, most designers still like to use graph paper and drafting tools. I am somewhere in between, I prefer the old-school techniques yet I appreciate and experiment with all the new technology.

Last night I was reading the September issue of Traditional Home and saw that the iPhone recently debuted an app called "Ben Capture Color" where you can take a photo of an object who's color you like and within seconds you will be given an bevy of paint colors that closely match the object you photographed. Amazing! And this is a FREE download! http://www.apple.com/

There is also an app for interior designers (or wannabes) called "Mark on Call" which was created by L.A. based interior designer Mark Lewison. With this application, you can layout a room (to scale) then put down flooring, add architectural details and try out various furniture and appliances in the space you have created. Furthermore, you can add color, fabric, wood or stone from your own library or the applications preset options. Check out this full tutorial on You Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn51PgJYO0E. Super cool! I will put this into the category "why didn't I think of that?"

Oh, and the irony is that I splurged for the Treo so that I could have a camera on my phone to take pictures while I was out on shopping excursions! I am so three years ago.

  • Oprah's "Cutie Pie"

    Oprah's "Cutie Pie"

My lil' crush on Nate Berkus is ever growing. I know, I know...but how can you not? Well, his new TV show debuted yesterday and the crowd went wild for him! I mean, it was kinda ridiculous, like Beatles mania ridiculous. Those Oprah cult members are scary! I do think that Oprah is quite the puppet master but in her benevolent vein, Nate does design for very worthy and grateful people and that is amazing to watch! I totally cried. I hope I don't have to stop watching like I had to stop watching Extreme Home Makeover because I was always such a sobbing mess.

Nate has a segment called "Curbside Pickup" where he turns garage sale or curbside finds into treasures. These new creations will then be used in the rooms he designs and if not, those items will be auctioned off at the end of the season and all proceeds will go to charity.

He also revealed "the Instant Design Studio, a one-of-a-kind 3-D technology, which allows him to create a virtual reality and transform a space with the touch of a finger right before the viewer's eyes." I must admit, it is pretty darn cool. I mean, I am old school and like drawing but I am also quite taken with technology.

Local folks, it is on everyday at 9:00 on Fox.

Took some Instagrams of the shop...for those of you that don't follow me I'll share.

Have y'all heard that Instagram parady to the Nickelback song? I can't take an Instagram without singing it. It is freaking hilarious.

    CollegeHumor's Favorite Funny Videos

This is one of my besties Mason and I in the photobooth at the SOS Black & White party on Saturday night. We co-chaired the event last year and this year we got to enjoy ourselves...perhaps a little too much!

Big game this weekend! I'm going to my friend's annual Superbowl party...they go all out and get a huge tent in their yard with a movie screen and bleachers with VIP seating. Jack's Cosmic Dog is there along with the peanut guy from the USC games and they serve bevos from the competing teams regions. My great friend Lauren Heuber of Munster Branch Vintage rentals/events is helping to plan it and has some great ideas in store! I'll try to remember to take some photos to share with you because she is super talented.

I don't give a dang about pro-football but I promised a certain someone that I'd root for SF so go 9'ers!

    Have a great weekend y'all!

  • Movies & Design

    Movies & Design

I am a huge, huge, huge movie buff. I love movies for the entertainment factor, obviously, but I also love them for the entire creative process that envelopes them. If you think about all that goes into the production of a movie from screenplay adaptation to casting to location scouting to set design to wardrobe creation to trailer development, I would love to do all of it! My dad has always teased me that The Oscars are like my version of The Superbowl.

As you can image, I have always dreamed about doing set design. While working at a retail shop in Charleston, I met a production assistant for the film The Notebook. I bombarded that poor woman with so many questions that I ran her out of the store! Before she left she was nice enough to invite me to watch them film a block away on Pitt Street. One of the coolest experiences of my life! [Should I not admit that?] It was fun to see how they transformed our quaint little Mt. Pleasant village into a 1940's storefront.

Anyway, there are certainly some iconic films when it comes to set design: Somethings Gotta Give, The Holiday and Father of the Bride are the films that my clients mention most often. All of which, were created by famed director Nancy Meyers who is a god when it comes to depicting stunning dream homes that are undeniably timeless. Learn more about this talented director in this article via Silver Screen Surroundings blog (great source!) or here on imdb.com.

Can you guess which photo is from which movie?

I cannot talk about movies without mentioning a few of my obsessions. Hitchcock and Dorris Day films, both of which I discovered in high school and both of which require their own entire post so I will refrain from getting started. However, I also grew up watching James Bond movies with my dad and my brother and although I enjoyed the plot; over-the-top bad guys, high-tech gadgets, and kitschy one-liners, I especially loved watching the films. The Bond series spans over five decades (and counting) so each film captures the trends of the times in regards to fashion, furnishings, architecture and technology.

    Dr. No (1962)

    Moonraker (1979)

    Casino Royale (2006)

Have a movie you love for the set design? Let me know!

  • Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are!

Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are!

I kinda feel bad for all of the homeless armoires out there since the invention of the flat screen TV. But I am happy to have more design freedom than revolving a room around a large TV cabinet. And it has been interesting to witness the design world adapt to the change in technology. As you might guess, I am more interested in the creative and customized solutions than the standard issue stock variety but each has its place in society so here goes...

    Me Likey!

I really like the idea of using architectural pieces like this.

I don't know if the owners hid a TV behind those old doors or not but it would be a lot cooler if they did!

And these smart folks used the space under the stairs to do some built-in cabinets that when closed, gives the illusion of a flat wall with amazing architectural detail. Kudos!

Ok, these are the standard stock issue variety I was referring to earlier...still smart, just more obvious. There is a frame surrounding the flat screen and the art actually rolls down to conceal the television. You can choose from their art or submit your own artwork. Additionally, there is a mirror option where you can see the TV picture when it is on but you just see the mirror when it is off.

Eh. A little to Star Trek-ish for me.

Check out this craziness...it lifts out from under the bed!
I am thinking the person that buys this also has a recliner with a built-in cooler.

  • Love & Other Drugs

    Love & Other Drugs

We went to see Love & Other Drugs last weekend. It is GOOD! I must say, Jake and Anne can act. And there is loads of nudity. (Note that I am not complaining about this.) Anne's character's apartment inspired this post: An artist's loft. There are some musts in every artist's loft. Let's discuss...

    Tall ceilings...check.
(The 20' leaded windows were amazing!)

    No walls to separate rooms...check.
(I don't know about the bathtub exposed to the bedroom and living room however I do like the tub itself! Especially with Jake in it.)

Bed in the middle of the place...check!
(If I had Jake I would want the bed easily accessible...I'm just sayin'!)

    Secondhand furniture...check!

Kitchen that doesn't see much action...check.

    Unless you count this...

    Yowza!

    Anti-modern technology...check.
    (I do love this phone.)

    I couldn't resist...

(This really makes me laugh as I use to do graphic design but no longer have any of the software... Clearly!)

Now speaking of Jake Gyllenhaal...Swyllenhal? Really? I adore Taylor Swift but I don't like them together. Am I green? Yes. 1,000 times yes.

Sorry for the lackadaisical posts but my scanner has been on the fritz for a couple of weeks. Bought a new one today so I will be back in action pronto. Have a great weekend! Lots of fun stuff planned...crafting some Christmas gifts, Awendaw Music Festival, a Christmas party, downtown Christmas parade...fa-la-la-la-la...

  • I'd Rather Be Surfing

    I'd Rather Be Surfing

    The internet that is.

So I spent the weekend surfing Irene. Just kidding. I don't surf, nor am I that daring (stupid?). We didn't get too much here, Irene was kind to us. My friend and I did go out to take a look at the amazing sky Friday night. I was trying to show you a photo I took of said amazing sky and a hilarious video of a guy I know getting totally blindsided by a huge wave but I'm having such technical difficulties...all the way around. My computer is dying. My sweet friend who works in IT tried to help but wiped out all my settings. I am so lost! It takes like 20 mins to download a webpage. I'm way behind in work. Man do we take technology for granted when it works well! So bare with me this week...I might not be posting much. And if anyone has any advice, recommendations, anecdotes, etc. on buying a new laptop I'd love to hear it. Thanks! Meanwhile I will be doing a lot of this...

(Ugh, I can't even load this stupid pic of me drinking lots of wine!)

So I'm off to drink more wine.
