    MAMA'S LITTLE HELPER

    Hello...My dear blogging friends!

I have been stitching away on some old fashioned vintage bonnets. Over the past few years, I've made these sweet prairie bonnets for several of the little girls in my life. They remind me of the young pioneer girls that trudged alongside the covered wagons. My great grandmother was six years old when she traveled with her parents across the plains in the covered wagon from Tecumseh, Kansas to the Oregon Territory. I have lovingly dedicated these bonnets to her...Evaleena Benson Newman.

Don't you think Laura Ingalls Wilder would have loved wearing this sunbonnet? "THREE IN ONE" 1. As an Apron with a nice pocket in front.2. As a Sunbonnet to shade one's sweet face from the hot sun3. As an extra spacious Clothespin Apron when folded up and buttoned(see button and buttonhole placement in a photo below)

    M. L. Attwell

I made my own coordinating binding for this one.
I think it added a bit of extra charm.

My favorite collection of fabric is Aunt Grace's 1930 reproduction prints.
I have been collecting these prints for nearly 20 years.
I also love feedsack prints and have a few original ones.

    A TINY TUTORIAL
    For Clothespin Apron pouch

    **Tie apron around child's waist
**Attach lower right corner buttonhole to upper right button.
**Then, attach lower left buttonhole to upper left button.
    There you have it...
A handy pouch for gathering posies, holding clothespins...
and if you're very very careful
    a few farm fresh eggs.

My prairie bonnets and their sewing pattern are being featured at a local quilt shop in the town where I live.
I will be selling the pattern on Etsy in the near future.

I received an order from a shop in Sisters, Oregon. These are some that I've made for their shop.
I used reproduction prints from the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
You might recognize some American Jane...Dick and Jane prints.

    MAMA'S LITTLE HELPERS

These are a few of my favorite things...
How I love the soft colors and old fashioned conversation prints!

    Many Hands Make Light Work!

Thank you for visiting me, my dear friends!
I hope you have a lovely weekend.

    Blessings,
    Carolynn xoxo

    Happy Harvest

Welcome to My November Nest... I'm so thankful for my blogging friends...Each one of you!

Happy Harvest from my home to yours.
Isn't the sweet little wool felt quilt simply wonderful?
It arrived in the my mailbox from my darling adopted daughter, Paula,
    "Victoria Rose Primitives ".
She lovingly designed and handstitched it for me.
Doesn't it look perfect with all the Autumn touches surrounding it?
    Thank you, sweet Paula!

"These are a few of my favorite things..."

My dear Mother gave me this little dutch girl.
    Mom turned 90 this year.
Her Father gave her this pretty porcelain
figurine when she was a young girl back in the 1930s.

When Summer ended I removed all my red accent pieces
and began adding orange touches for the Fall.
I love changing seasons with a new "Tweak " of color.
    Easy Peasy!

My sister, Rebecca , gave me this tiny tureen several years ago.
She knows how much I love blueware .
    Thank you, Becca!

A beribboned wreath rests on a drawer pull.
I like the bright orange splash of Fall color
    and anything plaid!

In Finland bringing a neighbor salt and bread as a gift signifies ones offering of lasting friendship.

Thank you for your genuine offerings of friendship through your visits and encouraging words. Blessings,Carolynn xoxo

  • Just Spring

    Just Spring

Pink, lilac, sky blue, sunny yellow & minty green...
    Yes...Spring is almost here!

Eggs are everyday reminders of new life.
    Little Baby Chicks
Even our gardens are showing new signs of life...
    Sunny yellow daffodils
    Purple Crocus
    Golden Forsythia

The sweet little girl is my husband's Mother, Anne . The photo was taken in the 1930s.
She is such a loving and wonderful Mother-in-love.
My bedroom is a peaceful respite decorated in powder blue, soft pink and buttery yellow.

    I love sewing.
One of my favorite things to make are Heirloom baby garments.
    I, especially, love Christening Gowns.
Soft white batiste, dainty pin tucks and embroidery.
    What treasured keepsakes they make.

"Desert Rose" from my sweet Gramma.
I have many fond memories of family gathered around Gramma and Grampa's table on Easter Sunday.
She always served us on her beautiful Franciscan Ware.

A pretty little Rose teacup and saucer from my Mother.

    Vintage touches...
    Lace that my Gramma crocheted
Vintage plates from my thrifting adventures.

This pretty little cream and sugar are thrifted.
I love the feminine touch they give my cottage shelf.

    A tiny little tea cup
    Yes...Another thrifted treasure!

    And now for a
    SNEAK PEEK!

I've been having fun working on something special
    for the Easter Swap.
Can you guess what I'm making?

  • Wintry Blue

    Wintry Blue

Blessings...to each one of you. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. The holiday season is in full swing and I can't wait to join in. I've been itching to get my decorating started.

An elderly friend of my Mom gave her this vintage 1930s Bakelite Church. It winds up and plays a tinnie but sweet sounding tune.
Several years ago my Mom gave it to me.
    It is a treasured keepsake.
I display it every year for Christmas.

Meet my beautiful Russian Blue , Abbie.
She is very sweet and extremely shy.
When I found her at the Humane Society
    she was terribly traumatized.
It took me five years to win her trust and woo her into my lap.
    Having, finally, conquered her fears
she has become my forever lap kitty!

    ,
Just a little nine patch quilt that I made a few years ago.
I always use cotton batting and unwashed fabric when I make my quilts.
After I have totally finished making the quilt I toss it into the washer...
(adding a cup of vinegar to set the color)
and, then, after washing on warm I, promptly, place it in the dryer.
All the cotton shrinks just a tad bit creating a soft, cuddly old fashioned looking and feeling quilt.

Now here's one laid back, Dude.
Schlomo is as mellow and easy going as can be.
You may ask, "Why the name, Schlomo?"
My husband is a violinist and a huge fan of the accomplished violinist...Schlomo Mintz.
It just happens to be that our last name is Mintz.
What can I say...It was my husband's turn
    to name our newest pet.

It looks like I got my wish!
We've had several snowfalls in the past month.
The elevation here is 3,623 above sea level.
The ski resort at Mt. Bachelor is just 22 miles up the road.
At 5,700 ft. two feet of snow fell in just one day last week.

Thank you, my blogging pals, for your friendship and kind words. When I started blogging I had no idea how many treasured friends I would have the privilege of adding to my life.I am grateful for each one of you! Have a great week! Blessings,Carolynn xoxo

In case you're looking for my Tweak of the Week...
    Here it is:

Originally, these HOME votifs were a rustic dark brown.
I spray painted them a soft blue and then gave them a coat of spray adhesive.
For a wintry touch I sprinkled them with glittery snow.
I love tweaking things to match the season
and for just a few dollars worth of paint and glitter!

    "Give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name;
    worship the Lord
    in the beauty of holiness."
    Psalm 29:2

  • Red & White Toile

    Red & White Toile

Hello, my friends...I hope you are having a wonderful day!
RED IS MY FAVORITE COLOR! My cottage home is accented with the color red. Every room (except the bedrooms) in my home has a bit of red in it.It is such a warm, welcoming color.

"ZOEY CAT" Zoey was a rescue kitty from the Humane Society. She is an affectionate, strong-willed housecat who loves a good comb out. Her idea of exercise is a nice "brisk sit"! Her shiny black coat looks stunning against the red toile.

Before: Boring, frayed, tired and very faded barkcloth... After: Red and white toile with small red checked coordinating print

I love this old 1930s rocking chair!
A friend gave it to me in 1975. It has had many faces over the past 35 years.

I enjoy creating my own original design.
An added placket to insure a good fit
With covered buttons fastened into button holes
    Red check ties
    and a
    Red check ruffled skirt

It was, definitely, time to give this wonderful rocker a fresh new look. Don't you agree?

    Eh Alors! J'ai Finis!
    (And, at last, I finished!)
Oh, the satisfaction of giving somethig OLD a pretty new face!

Thank you for visiting my toile update.I love sharing ideas and techniques.I have several more chairs that I have slipcovered and will be posting in the coming days. Please come back! Blessings to each one of you,Carolynn xoxo

    October on the Oregon Coast

Along the beautiful Oregon Coast Where I grew up...

I've had a wonderful few days visiting one of my favorite places in the whole wide world.
This little cove is called "Boiler Bay".
In the wintertime it's a boiling cauldron of white froth and waves that seem a mile high.
Please turn the volume all the way down...The strong winds sound awful!

Looking south toward "Yaquina Head Lighthouse".
As a teenager I used to spend the entire day on a Saturday strolling along the water's edge.

"Yaquina Bay Bridge" built in the 1930s. It's on the National Registry of Historic Places.
It's Art Deco and Gothic design is stunning.

As far as the east is from the west
    the north from the south...

"Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
    If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
If I settle on the far side of the sea,
Even there your hand will hold me fast.
Your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, "surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,"
    even the darkness will not be dark to you;
The night will shine like the day,
for the darkness is as light to you."
    Psalm 139:7-16

Beautiful Yet Treacherous Pacific Coast of Oregon
Brave hearted fishermen earn a living fishing for crab, salmon and tuna.
I'd like to dedicate this mural to
    "Gustolph "Gus" Wagner"
who perished at sea in 1962.
He was my Sunday School teacher's loving husband.

Along the waterfront are many beautiful murals
    painted by Oregon artist
    Rick Chambers.

    Abundant Harvest from the Sea

Thank you for joining me as I revisited the places that I love
    from my childhood.

I hope you are having a wonderful day,
    my dear blogging friends.
