American College of the Building Arts

The American College of the Building Arts (ACBA) is decicated to educating the next generation of building artisans and to preserving the building arts in a manner never before seen in America. Under the direction of our experienced faculty, students have the opportunity to recieve a quality liberal arts education while they learn to skills required to excel in their chosen field. This combination of education, training and access to highly experienced faculty is available nowhere else in the United States. The departments of study include: Stone, Carpentry, Forged Architectural Ironwork, Plaster Working, Preserved Masonry and Timber Framing.

I am speaking at their event on March 19 on how to incorporate custom details such as ironwork, woodwork, stone and plaster into interior design as well as how to repurpose old architectural pieces and elements into current interiors.

But I need help! I want to have as many visuals as I can to show the people that attend the event so I am asking for you to submit to me any photos of either interesting architectural details that you have used in your home or design projects OR old architectural pieces/elements that you have incorporated into your home or design projects. I will be featuring your photos on my blog (with your permission) and selecting a winner at random to receive one of my favorite books, For The Love of Old by Mary Randolph Carter. Please submit all photos to me sidney@eclectic-idg.com by Friday, March 11. Let me know if you have any questions! Here are some ideas to get you inspired!

    My Stint in Jail

Got your attention, huh? I recently was able to tour the old Charleston jail downtown which presently serves as part of the campus for The American College of the Building Arts. It is so fascinating! Unfortunately, most of the students were away studying for mid-terms but I was able to get inside to see their workshops.

Sometimes students will sketch out designs from historical landmarks to recreate for practice and sometimes people commission them for their homes, businesses or preservation projects.

The main areas of study are Carpentry, Architectural Stone, Plasterworking, Forged Ironwork, Masonry and Timber Framing. Here are some images from the workshops that I was able to see on my tour.

If you are interested in learning more about The American College of the Building Arts, please visit their website. It is an amazing program promoting the education of the next generation of building artisans and preserving the building arts in a manner never before seen in America. And if you are local, you should check out their festival on March 19 and you must attend their annual RED Party held around Halloween...it is a super FUN event benefiting the school.

And please don't forget to send me photos of either interesting architectural details that you have used in your home/design projects OR old architectural pieces/elements that you have incorporated into your home/design projects. I will be featuring your photos on my blog and selecting a winner at random to receive one of my favorite books, For The Love of Old by Mary Randolph Carter. • Design Crush: Melanie Turner

    Design Crush: Melanie Turner

    Atlanta Homes Magazine

These rooms are designed by Melanie Turner of Atlanta design firm, Turner Davis Interiors, check out the website. This is how she describes her style on her Facebook page...

"Inspired by fashion and borrowing a palette from nature, Melanie Turner's interiors possess a timeless quality that celebrates architectural details and classic design."

Melanie was named 2009 Southeast Designer of the Year, awarded Architectural Digest's Kitchen of the Year and her work is featured in the current issue of Veranda. I think she does a killer job of styling her rooms!

  • I Have Got To Get An iPhone!

I Have Got To Get An iPhone!

I am still kicking myself for getting bamboozled into buying a (very expensive) Treo three days before the iPhone debuted (for less than the Treo mind you). Seriously? Ugh. And the technology on the iPhone keeps getting cooler and cooler further enticing me into Apple's web...

Most designers would agree that the interior design industry, as a whole, is a little behind the times (technologically speaking). I like to think that this is because design is such a tactile and emotional experience so it can be hard to capture the same feelings via a monitor. I know that I prefer to see, touch and feel items before recommending them to a client. Even with AutoCAD, most designers still like to use graph paper and drafting tools. I am somewhere in between, I prefer the old-school techniques yet I appreciate and experiment with all the new technology.

Last night I was reading the September issue of Traditional Home and saw that the iPhone recently debuted an app called "Ben Capture Color" where you can take a photo of an object who's color you like and within seconds you will be given an bevy of paint colors that closely match the object you photographed. Amazing! And this is a FREE download! http://www.apple.com/

    Ben Capture Color App

There is also an app for interior designers (or wannabes) called "Mark on Call" which was created by L.A. based interior designer Mark Lewison. With this application, you can layout a room (to scale) then put down flooring, add architectural details and try out various furniture and appliances in the space you have created. Furthermore, you can add color, fabric, wood or stone from your own library or the applications preset options. Check out this full tutorial on You Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn51PgJYO0E. Super cool! I will put this into the category "why didn't I think of that?"

Oh, and the irony is that I splurged for the Treo so that I could have a camera on my phone to take pictures while I was out on shopping excursions! I am so three years ago.

    The Little Black Door

Here is a photo of a Mt. Pleasant project I have been working on. We gutted the place and added some much needed architectural details. I will have more photos later...still lots to do...but was happy with the black doors!

Here is some more little black inspiration...

  • This Week I...

    This Week I...

    Installed shades at Sea Palms...

    And appliances...

    And tile...

[This picture reminds me of the back of a Highlights Magazine...circle all the things that are missing from this image.]

This is it in case you can't see it very well...

It's SO gorgeous! Even the other subs on the job stopped to touch it.

    Installed window treatments at I'On...

I'm thinking that I want to start naming my projects like Jeff Lewis does on Flipping Out.

I've been sick all week but powering through. I think my body hates me. I took one day off and sadly really enjoyed sitting still. [despite the hammering and sawing that was going on in my kitchen below...not so relaxing!]

Here are some more photos from the charity event I (and many others) put on a couple of weeks ago.

So you know how obsessed I am with Ryan Reynolds and how happy I was when these two split, right?

Not happy about this I might add...

Well Ryan and Scarlett's house is for sale for $3.65 million and I am happy to report that it is a glorious mid-century number. I'd like to think he picked it out.

On a related note, guess what I bought this week at an architectural salvage place?

    Why? I'll show you...

    Told you...lil' bit obsessed!

Am looking forward to a fun Superbowl party that my friends throw each year...I'll try to take pictures as my friend Lauren who is starting her own party planning/event rental business is helping with it this year and has LOTS of great details planned.

    Have a great weekend!
