  • Spring

As evidenced by the animals, spring has arrived. Yesterday evening as I was jogging, I spotted a little wild rabbit sitting on the grass verge not five feet away. He was the cousin of my rabbit, a leaner, swifter, wilder version. His stippled brown fur blended him perfectly into the pine needles and debris underfoot. His watchful ovoid eyes and spoon-ears swivelled to apprise himself of my presence as I stopped to look, and he twitched a bit nervously and took a slight hop away, but resumed nibbling grass as if I wasn't even there.

A biker approached and I pointed at the rabbit to share the joy. He was an older, somewhat untidy-looking big man with a stringy gray comb-over and huge glasses. His chest yapped defensively: the head of a dachshund was peering out from where he'd tucked it somehow into his jacket. He stopped and smiled and his dachshund barked frenzily, but the rabbit paid little attention.

"Maybe he is sick, he doesn't run away," the man said in a strong Germanic accent. He began to get off his bike, holding protectively on to the dog. His stone-washed jeans were too short, exposing his socked ankles, and his sneakers were 80's white.

"No, no," I said, alarmed. "I think we'd better leave him alone." The rabbit, suddenly becoming aware of his possible peril, took a few slow hops toward the trees. "I guess he's OK," the man said. We both moved on, in our separate directions, although I looked back a little ways on to be sure he hadn't gone back to meddle with the rabbit. When I jogged by again, the rabbit was gone.

This morning just as I walked into work from my car, two mallards, male and female, soared down, braked for the landing, and waddled toward the door at the same time I did. It was as if the King and Queen of spring had come to pay a court visit. As I approached them they waddled away in the rapid "I'm not frightened enough to fly but I'm getting away from you" sort of way that water birds have, and wandered off into the garden border. I've no idea what they were doing there; there's a swamp nearby, and perhaps they were just taking a tour.

Spring is here; and that is cause for joy.

  • Spring

It was unaccountably spring when I stepped out of my door this morning. The earth was shades of brown and green, the snow completely gone, and the air warm. The gorgeous morning sunlight was on everything, turning the pines of the forest into almost a cathedral. A bird called sweetly and insistently from a distant tree. The crows called more raucously and clamorously.

The air smelt of spring, that fresh, alive, invigorating, earthy smell that feels as if it nearly imparts life with every breath. It was as if the earth had briefly shaken itself free from its winter slumber in impatient jubilation of the time when it would become a nursery of expectant life. Everything seemed excited, alive, waiting.

It was with great reluctance that I stepped into the door at work, knowing that it meant being imprisoned away from such beauty until it had shouted and skipped and flung itself away into night. But somehow just being there is enough. . .and I can see the gentle hand of its Creator on every branch, touching it in love. How much joy it must give him. . .

"he [Jesus] upholds the universe by the word of his power." (Hebrews 1:3)

There Is A Spring In My Step!

Ahhh, spring! Don't you just LOVE it! Not that we have had a rough winter here in Charleston but just knowing we will get to spend lots of time outdoors in the sunshine...makes me super happy! And speaking of the outdoors, is your outdoor living space all ready for spring entertaining? If not, call me, I'd love to help! It is one of my favorite spaces to work on!!! I love all of the outdoor friendly products and nature inspired decor elements...gives me lots of opportunities to think outside the box. Remember last year when I used galvanized conduit piping as an outdoor drapery rod? Or when I turned an architectural find into my outdoor coffee table? Yeah, stuff like that. I do normal things too. But I think the key is first making it a functional and comfortable living space then add a few of those unexpected "wow" moments to keep your house from looking like page 38 of the Frontgate catalog. [Nothing against you Frontgate.]

Here are some outdoor spaces from my Pinterest Board to get you inspired...

    Dearest Joyce,
Thank you for this darling keepsake.
It is so sweet and will grace my kitchen this Spring.
I love every thoughtful gesture and each lovely gift.
In the coming weeks I will be sharing all of your red pretties, too.
I am thankful to have gained a dear new friend.

I'm so happy you stopped, my dear blogging family and friends.

Blessings to each one of you
    and a Happy Spring!

"For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone.
    The flowers appear on the earth;
the time of the singing of birds is come
and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.

The fig tree putteth forth her green figs,
and the vines with the tender grapes give a good smell.
Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away."

  • Spring Has Sprung

    Spring Has Sprung

    Its about damn time!

I saw on the news that it was snowing on the first day of spring in Connecticut. It was 86 degrees here in Charleston on Saturday! It makes me wonder if those people living in Connecticut know about places like Charleston? I am teasing, I am sure Connecticut is beautiful and you people think we are nutso to live in Charleston in August. You might be right.

Anyhoo...tulips are my favorite flower. Maybe it is because of my Dutch heritage. Just kidding. I am not at all Dutch (at least I don't think). And I am not even certain that tulips bloom in the spring but I am going to continue with this post anyway...
