The sweet little girl is my husband's Mother, Anne . The photo was taken in the 1930s. She is such a loving and wonderful Mother-in-love. My bedroom is a peaceful respite decorated in powder blue, soft pink and buttery yellow.
I love sewing. One of my favorite things to make are Heirloom baby garments. I, especially, love Christening Gowns. Soft white batiste, dainty pin tucks and embroidery. What treasured keepsakes they make.
"Desert Rose " from my sweet Gramma. I have many fond memories of family gathered around Gramma and Grampa's table on Easter Sunday. She always served us on her beautiful Franciscan Ware.

Vintage touches... Lace that my Gramma crocheted Vintage plates from my thrifting adventures.
This pretty little cream and sugar are thrifted. I love the feminine touch they give my cottage shelf.

And now for a SNEAK PEEK!
I've been having fun working on something special for the Easter Swap. Can you guess what I'm making?

Hello...My sweet blogging friends! In my post I'd like to share some of the bright red cherries that are sprinkled throughout my home. From cotton aprons trimmed with old fashioned red rick rack to cozy quilts...They are all such a lovely addition to any country cottage decor!
Each year my sister, Sherry, blesses me with lots and lots of cherries. I like to dehydrate and then freeze them. They are delicious in homemade ice cream, nut breads and homemade granola bars!
I've been busy in my sewing room this past week making up thissweet little 1940s vintage apron.I found this wonderful vintage pattern thenmodified it a bit for this apron.
Pardon my camera exposure...The apron looks blue, but it's black with tiny little cherries and cherry red rick rack.
Aprons always look so sweet garnished with rick rack. The original 1940s vintage pattern incorporated lots and lots of it.
I was thrilled to find this 1940s Vintage Apron pattern. When I have an etsy shop I will be stitching up these darling aprons for sale.
I love...love...love the back of this apron. If you look closely there is a band between the shoulders to prevent the straps from slipping off your shoulders. I attached the straps at the waistband with buttonholes and shiny black buttons.
The finishing touch!
MORE CHERRIES!
The table runner with the bright red cherries was lovingly made by my sister, Patti, for my birthday. Doesn't it look pretty snugged in with the vintage quilt and red pillows? (I "TWEAKED" this sadly worn antique settee...It's in dire need of a new upholstering. All the soft textiles offer a simple disguise!)
So many of my blogging friends have a penchant for cherries. And, so do I!
HERE ARE A FEW CHERRIES FROM AROUND MY HOME.
This is a closeup of a large tole painted glass jarthat I store my twill tape that I use for my"Chenille Cottage" labels.
Isn't she lovely! My darling adopted daughter, Paula, from "Rose Fairie Cottage" made this sweet little quilted portrait for me for Mother's Day.
(This is the fabric I used to recover my ironing board.) Thank you my sweet friends for stopping by for a visit.
How I would love to share a slice of freshly baked cherry walnut bread and a hot cup of tea with each one of you!
Have a wonderful week! Blessings, Carolynn xoxo
"Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him." Psalm 34:8
I'm wishing each one of you an "EGGCEPTIONAL" week. Many of my blogging friends are raising chickens...some for the first time. I invite you to tag along...Please enjoy this Farm Fresh post.
We have dear friends that raise chickens. They brought us these fresh eggs. So many soft colors... and Such spectacular taste!

Blessings...to each one of you. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. The holiday season is in full swing and I can't wait to join in. I've been itching to get my decorating started.
An elderly friend of my Mom gave her this vintage 1930sBakelite Church. It winds up and plays a tinnie but sweet sounding tune. Several years ago my Mom gave it to me. It is a treasured keepsake. I display it every year for Christmas.
Meet my beautiful RussianBlue, Abbie. She is very sweet and extremely shy. When I found her at the Humane Society she was terribly traumatized. It took me fiveyears to win her trust and woo her into my lap. Having, finally, conquered her fears she has become my forever lap kitty!
, Just a little ninepatch quilt that I made a few years ago. I always use cotton batting and unwashed fabric when I make my quilts. After I have totally finished making the quilt I toss it into the washer... (adding a cup of vinegar to set the color) and, then, after washing on warm I, promptly, place it in the dryer. All the cotton shrinks just a tad bit creating a soft, cuddly old fashioned looking and feeling quilt.
Now here's one laid back, Dude. Schlomo is as mellow and easy going as can be. You may ask, "Why the name, Schlomo?" My husband is a violinist and a huge fan of the accomplished violinist...SchlomoMintz. It just happens to be that our last name is Mintz. What can I say...It was my husband's turn to name our newest pet.
It looks like I got my wish! We've had several snowfalls in the past month. The elevation here is 3,623 above sea level. The ski resort at Mt. Bachelor is just 22 miles up the road. At 5,700 ft. two feet of snow fell in just one day last week.
Thank you, my blogging pals, for your friendship and kind words. When I started blogging I had no idea how many treasured friends I would have the privilege of adding to my life.I am grateful for each one of you! Have a great week! Blessings,Carolynnxoxo
In case you're looking for my Tweak of the Week... Here it is:
Originally, these HOME votifs were a rustic dark brown. I spray painted them a soft blue and then gave them a coat of spray adhesive. For a wintry touch I sprinkled them with glittery snow. I love tweaking things to match the season and for just a few dollars worth of paint and glitter!

Welcome to "A Cottage Tour". Last weekend my sister and I had the fun of touring two charming beach cottages in the tiny village of Neskowin, Oregon. This little town is situated on the Oregon Coastbordering the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean.
The Kitchen is the Heart of the Home... so I thought it best to begin your tour in thiswarm and inviting room.
Our lovely cottage host, Janet, had baked up a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies for her guests to nibble on. Everything about this charming kitchen says, "Pull up a chair and sit for a while!"
Do you see the bright red cherries on that wonderful plate?
Past and Perfect Kitchen
Nothing says "Cottage" like the color RED! (Which just happens to be my favorite color!)
I loved the vintage touches that greeted meas I strolled from room to room.
Every room was full of colorful surprises...whimsy and wonderful antiques.
It has been a pleasure sharing Janet's Cozy Kitchen with you. Be sure and pop in again... I have more cottage touches to share in the coming days...
Blessings, my sweet friends! Carolynn xoxo

Along the beautiful Oregon Coast Where I grew up...
I've had a wonderful few days visiting one of my favorite places in the whole wide world. This little cove is called "Boiler Bay". In the wintertime it's a boiling cauldron of white froth and waves that seem a mile high. Please turn the volume all the way down...The strong winds sound awful!
Looking south toward "Yaquina Head Lighthouse". As a teenager I used to spend the entire day on a Saturday strolling along the water's edge.
"Yaquina Bay Bridge" built in the 1930s. It's on the National Registry of Historic Places. It's Art Deco and Gothic design is stunning.
As far as the east is from the west the north from the south...
"Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; If I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, If I settle on the far side of the sea, Even there your hand will hold me fast. Your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, "surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to you; The night will shine like the day, for the darkness is as light to you." Psalm 139:7-16
Beautiful Yet Treacherous Pacific Coast of Oregon Brave hearted fishermen earn a living fishing for crab, salmon and tuna. I'd like to dedicate this mural to "Gustolph "Gus" Wagner" who perished at sea in 1962. He was my Sunday School teacher's loving husband.
Along the waterfront are many beautiful murals painted by Oregon artist Rick Chambers.
Abundant Harvest from the Sea
Thank you for joining me as I revisited the places that I love from my childhood.
I hope you are having a wonderful day, my dear blogging friends.
Blessings, Carolynn xoxo

As you all know... I LOVE COTTAGE STYLE! There are so many ways to achieve this charming, vintage look. My Gramma is my inspiration. No matter where she lived her home was a haven...a place of love and a gentle sweetness. She was not a woman of means but her home was always enchanting...a little piece of heaven!
This charming shelf has been in my home for over twenty years. It was originally brown, then red and now creamy white. My Gramma crocheted the beautiful white lace. She lovingly stitched it to my wedding pillowcases many years ago. After the pillowcases wore thin I carefully removed the lace and saved her lovely handiwork. Nearly all the items...dishes, cups, the candlestand, creamers and sugar bowl were thrifted. The only things I purchased new were the three candles and the "Cottage" sign.
Crocheted cotton lace made by my Gramma. Hasn't it made a perfect edging on this pretty white shelf?
This darling cream and sugar is one of my favorite thrift shop treasures. I paid a total of five dollars for them.
My sweet Mom-in-Love gave me this feminine little rocking chair when we left Tennessee to move to Oregon. I recovered the seat and fashioned a new cushion out of discounted home decorating fabrics. The country french scene is a fabric sample that I purchased for two dollars. I added soft pink pompoms to add a bit of whimsy.
Not very pretty with books and baskets in view...
"SOLUTION" A soft and pretty skirt. I made a waist band and added a skirt... Just like I was making a wrap skirt for myself.
Would you believe I found this beautiful lamp at my local thrift shop? It was on sale for sixteen dollars. It had no shade and a very tattered cloth electric cord. My hubby rewired it for me and I purchased a new shade. I found the crystal trim on clearance and added it to give it a touch of elegance.
Oh, the things one can do with a can of spray paint! The little chair and powder blue tray are items that I repainted. They were originally brown. The linens... clock... candle votif and baby shoes were all thrifted finds.
My sweet little Zoey loves sitting by the fire. She is one of my three housekitties. The blue and white nine patch quilt is something I made to disguise the large opening above the fireplace. There are various items stored discreetly behind the quilt. I made the white wicker chair cushions from discounted home decorator fabric. I shopped at Joanns and waited to use my 50% coupon to purchase the fabric.
Yes...I spray painted the little thrifted blue basket. It provided the perfect place to display some of my handmade pillows. I perched it atop a trio of hatboxes that provide storage for odds and ends. My cats love napping in this chair in the late afternoon.
I love having special quiet times in my blue plaid chair. The big chair and the matching loveseat used to be in our living room. The ottoman is cushy and my kitties love curling up at my feet. The quilt lying on the ottoman is one that I found thrifting. I only paid ten dollars for it. It is snuggly, soft and in perfect condition.
Thank you, my dear friends, for your kind visit to my Cottage Nest. I hope you'll come back... I have more to share... and, lots of helpful and inexpensive tips.
Blessings, Carolynn xoxo

Hello, my friends...I hope you are having a wonderful day! RED IS MY FAVORITE COLOR! My cottage home is accented with the color red. Every room (except the bedrooms) in my home has a bit of red in it.It is such a warm, welcoming color.
"ZOEY CAT" Zoey was a rescue kitty from the Humane Society. She is an affectionate, strong-willed housecat who loves a good comb out. Her idea of exercise is a nice "brisk sit"! Her shiny black coat looks stunning against the red toile.
Before: Boring, frayed, tired and very faded barkcloth... After: Red and white toile with small red checked coordinating print
I love this old 1930s rocking chair! A friend gave it to me in 1975. It has had many faces over the past 35 years.
I enjoy creating my own original design. An added placket to insure a good fit With covered buttons fastened into button holes Red check ties and a Red check ruffled skirt
It was, definitely, time to give this wonderful rocker a fresh new look. Don't you agree?
Eh Alors! J'ai Finis! (And, at last, I finished!) Oh, the satisfaction of giving somethig OLD a pretty new face!
Thank you for visiting my toile update.I love sharing ideas and techniques.I have several more chairs that I have slipcovered and will be posting in the coming days. Please come back! Blessings to each one of you,Carolynn xoxo

Join me as I sit down with local artist Shannon Smith and have a lil' chat...
So how did you get started painting? I was born and raised into a family of artists. My Mom, my twin sister, and I are all oil painters and my triplet brother is a photographer.
How has growing up in a family of artists shaped you as an artist?Life as a triplet and an artist have made to be a fun and interesting one! How unique to be able to share a close sibling bond as well as all sharing the same artistic talents. My Mom was a full time mother of three, but she started painting once we got out of the house and started going to school. I was exposed to art at a young age through her works, attending art shows, and our family travels almost always included visits to art museums. I have fond memories of dabbling in watercolors in Mom's studio. 1979, Age 7
So did you always know that you wanted to be an artist? Wanted to be an artist, yes. I always had a love of drawing and painting and grew up wishing to be an artist like my mom but didn't believe I could do it professionally. So I did not become serious about painting until college. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Clemson University with my focus on oil painting. After graduating I was unsure about being able to support myself and making a career out of my art. While at Clemson, I broke my leg skiing and had to undergo knee surgery and months of physical therapy. That unfortunate experience sparked my interest in the field of health therapies, mostly physical and occupational therapy. I moved back to Charleston and went back to school for a year to fulfill the health and science prerequisites needed to apply to MUSC's graduate program of Occupational Therapy. However, I was not accepted and although disappointed at the time, I quickly realized it was a blessing in disguise!
Had you ever shown your work before? I had exhibited in Spoleto's outdoor art show in the past with my college art and decided to paint for that year's upcoming festival in May. I painted 25 oils for the show and sold over half! I was thrilled beyond words at my success. It was the boost of confidence that I needed to follow my passion as an artist! I also give tremendous credit to my mom and her artist friends, watching them achieve established roles in the art community, both locally and nationally, truly gave me the courage to follow my passion and follow in their footsteps! I am now a full time professional artist of 15 years, showing in galleries and museums, and have not looked back since that May of 1996!
Where do you show your work? This year we celebrate the 10 year Anniversary of the opening of our family gallery, Smith Killian Fine Art on 9 Queen St downtown Charleston. [Shannon also show's her work at the following galleries: The Well's Gallery at Kiawah Island, South Carolina; Anne Irwin Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia; Parker Gallery in St. Simons Island, Georgia and the City Art Gallery in Greenville, North Carolina.
Where do you paint? My painting studio is in the upstairs of my home in Mount Pleasant, but I also take my "studio" outside and paint en plein-air when nice weather and great travel opportunities permit.
Shannon in her home studio.
Shannon plein-air painting in the misty rain on Shem Creek.
Also she is a Signature Member of the Plein-Air Painters of the Southeast.
How would you describe your paintings? My subject matter varies between landscape, still life, and figures while all sharing the common theme of dramatic use of light. I consider my style to be somewhat impressionistic and representational, with strong emphasis on color and light.
Here are some examples of her latest work.
"Cortona Light" 40x30 Oil on Linen
"Lowcountry Roots" 36x60 Oil on Linen
"Summer House II" 30x30 Oil on Linen
"The Waiter" 30x40 Oil on Linen
"Pink and Pewter" 16x20 Oil on Linen
Shannon has a wall in her studio she calls her "Travel Wall" where she creates paintings from all the places she travels. In the photo, you can see one of her two Himalayan cats, Ollie (other is Rufus). Ollie likes to sit on the sofa and watch Shannon paint. In fact, sometimes Ollie gets a little too close as he had green paint all over his beautiful white fur! Just one of the hazards of being the cat of an artist I suppose.
Shannon will be teaching a painting workshop along with fellow artist Laurie Meyer in Italy in April of 2012.
Since I am an interior designer, you know I am going to ask you about your home!
Your house is adorable! How long have you lived here? It will be 6 years this Thanksgiving. I bought it during the construction phase so I was able to customize some of the elements to my particular taste. What really drew me to it was the Nantucket cottage feel it had.
What is your favorite spot in your home and why? My back screened in porch without a doubt! I grew up always having a porch where our family shared meals and time together. It is my "happy place" where I unwind and truly relax, whether it be with my morning coffee or evening glass of wine. I just love being outside close to nature... watching the birds at my bird feeders and enjoying the critters that frequent the pond behind my backyard, ie. ducks, herons, egrets, turtles, snakes, and the occasional visiting gator! All while listening to water trickle from my fountain, I also take in the fast changing colors and clouds of evening light which soon become a beautiful night sky of moon and stars. I am also fortunate to have a front porch...now that is where I go to rock in my rockers and be more social with the close-by neighbors!
Name one item in your home that you are most proud of? I am most proud of my art collection...mostly oils and a few etchings and photographs. Of course they are all original pieces! While some are my own works, several pieces were traded with my family and artist friends, and some I have purchased through art galleries. I treasure each and every one for their meaning and inspiration to me and my life as an artist. I am out of wall space...time for a bigger house to continue my art collection!!
What is the first item you bought for your home? Afghan and Turkish hand made rugs from Zinn Rug Gallery. Most of my wall colors and furniture are shades of white and neutrals, therefore the rugs and artwork are a chance for a pop of color.
If you could update one aspect of your home what would it be and why? My light fixtures. When completing this house, I chose things that fit in with the traditional coastal cottage style. I now wish I had meshed more contemporary modern with the current cottage theme. I like the idea of new and modern mixed with antique and cottage...keeps it interesting! I am not at all a fan of "matching" decorating, color wise or furniture wise! I think changing out light fixtures, ie. my pendants over the kitchen bar and chandelier over the breakfast table, would be an easy way to update my home, giving it more of a modern twist without a lot of fuss.
It has been great getting to know you better, thanks for taking the time to sit with me Shannon!
[From The Front Porch Of ___ will become a regular post I will be doing for all of us to get to know local artists, business owners and craftsman in the Charleston area that are in some way "home" related. I hope you enjoy getting to know these folks as much I do!]
I have been stitching away on some old fashioned vintage bonnets. Over the past few years, I've made these sweet prairie bonnets for several of the little girls in my life. They remind me of the young pioneer girls that trudged alongside the covered wagons. My great grandmother was six years old when she traveled with her parents across the plains in the covered wagon from Tecumseh, Kansas to the Oregon Territory. I have lovingly dedicated these bonnets to her...Evaleena Benson Newman.
Don't you think Laura Ingalls Wilder would have loved wearing this sunbonnet? "THREE IN ONE"1. As an Apron with a nice pocket in front.2. As a Sunbonnet to shade one's sweet face from the hot sun3. As an extra spacious Clothespin Apron when folded up and buttoned(see button and buttonhole placement in a photo below)
M. L. Attwell
I made my own coordinating binding for this one. I think it added a bit of extra charm.
My favorite collection of fabric is Aunt Grace's 1930 reproduction prints. I have been collecting these prints for nearly 20 years. I also love feedsack prints and have a few original ones.
A TINY TUTORIAL For Clothespin Apron pouch
**Tie apron around child's waist **Attach lower right corner buttonhole to upper right button. **Then, attach lower left buttonhole to upper left button. There you have it... A handy pouch for gathering posies, holding clothespins... and if you're very very careful a few farm fresh eggs.
My prairie bonnets and their sewing pattern are being featured at a local quilt shop in the town where I live. I will be selling the pattern on Etsy in the near future.
I received an order from a shop in Sisters, Oregon. These are some that I've made for their shop. I used reproduction prints from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. You might recognize some American Jane...Dick and Jane prints.
MAMA'S LITTLE HELPERS
These are a few of my favorite things... How I love the soft colors and old fashioned conversation prints!
Many Hands Make Light Work!
Thank you for visiting me, my dear friends! I hope you have a lovely weekend.
Blessings, Carolynn xoxo

Not a new design trick but still one of my favorites. I am a big believer of designing with function first then make it look pretty! And chalkboards are a must in any active family. They are great for identifying needed groceries in the kitchen, making to do lists in an office or distracting little ones while you prepare dinner. Here are some images of creative chalkboard installations that I have collected over the years. You can buy a can of chalkboard paint for under $20! Check out this how to guide from Lowe's.
I was inspired today by one of my favorite design blogs, Design Sponge, that did a post on colored chalkboard paint. A concept so simple that I cannot believe no one thought of it before! Check out the bevy of colors from Hudson Paint, produced by a family-run paint business in the Hudson Valley.
And check out the creative uses blogger Raina Kattelson found for the new paint!

How I love spending the day visiting thrift and antique shops! I have found, over the years, many vintage garments, fabrics and what-nots. I love finding a good bargain and my guest room is where many have been destined to live. I've been blessed with a large collection of "Precious Moments" that have been gifted to me through the years from dear family and friends. I love each one! I made the 30s log cabin quilt for my precious cat Chloe who I lost to kidney failure. When I see her blankie I remember snuggling her in it.
Thank you so much for visiting me and for spending a few precious moments in my cottage guest room! Blessings, Carolynn xoxo
Welcome to my Cottage Guest Room... Last April I posted just a few photos of this room. I have added several more. My April 24, 2012 has been my "most viewed" post with 2385 views.
There's nothing like a good nights sleep. My desire is for my guests to sleep well and wake up refreshed.
I love all things vintage! I found this old chair in an antique store in Lebanon, Tennessee. It's the perfect place to squirrel away with a good blog.
To protect the little woven husk stool that belonged to my husband's grandparents I slipcovered it in a minty green toile. The images are from my favorite nursery rhyme... "Hey Diddle Diddle...The Cat and the Fiddle".
"Precious Moments" Each one has been a thoughtful gift from my family and friends.
"Star light, Star bright, First star I see tonight. I wish I may I wish I might To have this wish I wish tonight."
"Sweet Dreams"
"Chloe's Quilt" My sweet kitty, Chloe was only with me five years. She suffered kidney failure. I made this small quilt for her. She loved to curl up and nap on it. I miss her!
Collecting and displaying vintage children's clothing is something I love to do.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" John 3:16
I love soft, cuddly chenille. That's the reason why I named my blog "Chenille Cottage".
I made this Teddy Bear with my favorite 1930 Aunt Grace's reproduction fabrics.
Lilac Lace curtains A Lavender and white quilt Rose colored lighting
I found this sweet doll cradle several years ago. It needed a little TLC. It soon became the perfect place for a few of my favorite things. A chenille pillow Quilted teddy bear Several small quilted pillows and my 1950 baby picture.
"Birdhouses" This miniature quilt is something I made several years ago. I enjoy displaying it in the Spring.
Something soft for your toesies!
"Corner Cubby" Each item on all the shelves was thrifted. One of my favorite things to do is to spend time hunting for treasures in my local thrift shops.
The beautiful hobnail bedspreads were thrifted. I paid $8 for each one.
I love kitties!
Sittin pretty!
My gentle little grey tabby cat, Schlomo.
"May Day Basket" May your day be filled with joy!
Thank you for popping in and visiting, my dear family and friends.
