  • Red & White Toile

    Red & White Toile

Hello, my friends...I hope you are having a wonderful day!
RED IS MY FAVORITE COLOR! My cottage home is accented with the color red. Every room (except the bedrooms) in my home has a bit of red in it.It is such a warm, welcoming color.

"ZOEY CAT" Zoey was a rescue kitty from the Humane Society. She is an affectionate, strong-willed housecat who loves a good comb out. Her idea of exercise is a nice "brisk sit"! Her shiny black coat looks stunning against the red toile.

Before: Boring, frayed, tired and very faded barkcloth... After: Red and white toile with small red checked coordinating print

I love this old 1930s rocking chair!
A friend gave it to me in 1975. It has had many faces over the past 35 years.

I enjoy creating my own original design.
An added placket to insure a good fit
With covered buttons fastened into button holes
    Red check ties
    and a
    Red check ruffled skirt

It was, definitely, time to give this wonderful rocker a fresh new look. Don't you agree?

    Eh Alors! J'ai Finis!
    (And, at last, I finished!)
Oh, the satisfaction of giving somethig OLD a pretty new face!

Thank you for visiting my toile update.I love sharing ideas and techniques.I have several more chairs that I have slipcovered and will be posting in the coming days. Please come back! Blessings to each one of you,Carolynn xoxo

  • REDvolution

    REDvolution

So I have mentioned many times that red is not my favorite color. [Thank God my dad doesn't read my blog because he would disown me seeing as how we are a HUGE University of Georgia family!] I think it stems from the fact that a) I am a summer...I mean my coloring so blues and greens and purples look better on me and therefore I gravitate towards those cool colors. Seriously, there is an annual charity event here called the RED Party and I have to go out and by something because I literally have no red in my closet. And b) I live in Charleston and I absolutely love the coast so this (I'm sure) influences the color pallet that I gravitate towards. Makes sense, right? Sooo...I feel the need to give some red love out because I do not hate the color red. Promise. I have decorated with it for clients many, many times. And since we have been seeing so much red on the red carpets I am thinking that this color will be showing up more and more in the decor world very soon. Don't ya think?

I especially like it done in small splashes so it doesn't overwhelm the room or make it feel heavy.

  • Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra, Ra Ra Ra Ra

Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra, Ra Ra Ra Ra

Admittedly (see, I got it now!), I am not the biggest fan of the holidays. I mean of course I love Christmas and all the parties and spending time with family-laughing, sharing fond memories, partaking in some spirits, eating good food, watching my nephews ruthlessly tear open gift after gift-but it is also super stressful! I mean this is the busiest time of year for my business then you add decorating clients homes for Christmas (which I love because I rarely get to do my own!) and then there is shopping for presents and traveling and making everyone happy and blah, blah, blah. But I am really trying this year. Really! I hope to be more like this...

Thanks for letting me vent :)

Now I am going to talk about some of the things I really dig as far as Christmas decorating goes. I was at a friend's house the other night and she had those lights on her tree that alternate between clear lights and colored lights. How have I never heard about these before? Brilliant. Totally solves one of life's many debates. [For the record, I am pro clear.] I am also loving anything natural and earthy-driftwood, paper whites, birch, seashells, garland, burlap, moss, boxwood...oh my.

    Love.

Not the biggest fan of things that scream Christmas.

Unless you are going to an ugly Christmas sweater party.
Who came up with this idea? I want to be your best friend. If you are a guy, I might want to be more than friends.

And red is my least favorite color (except when it comes to the GA Bulldogs) so I tend to go for the creams, golds, silvers, greens and even, perhaps, a Tiffany blue. Typically, I love when you can incorporate holiday decor into your normal, everyday decor. Like this...

The brilliance that is Suzanne Kasler. You go Atlanta.

Here are some other images that inspire me...

Let's face it, pretty much everything she does kicks ass.

Ditto for Ruthie. Love the atypical color scheme!

Eddie Ross you are a rock star.
This makes me want to take back my red comment.

  • Aprons Aprons!

    Aprons Aprons!

    Summertime Sewing...
    I love...love...love aprons!

What a joy it was to stitch up these children's aprons for the precious little ones!
I thought I would share my latest projects.
    There are four of them.

One of my favorite fabric collections...1930s reproductions.

Adding a ruffle in a coordinating print.

    Close Up...
    My favorite gathering method:
    1. Knot one end of DMC floss and then...
    2. Zigzag over floss (lay floss 1/4" from edge of fabric).
    3. Find center of ruffle piece and apron and then pin together.
    4. Tighten DMC until gathers are equally spread on both sides of center pin.
    5. Pin entire ruffle in place.
    6. Stitch carefully along gathered edge making sure to hide zig zag inside seam. (1/2" seam)
    7. Remove DMC after stitching is complete.

(I like this method because the DMC floss doesn't break when gathering.)

I love using coordinates...the more prints the better!
The apron bodice is lined with a coordinating fabric for extra strength and wear.

Making my own "Chenille Cottage" labels
and adding them discreetly to the inside of the apron.

Red, white and blue beach balls.
I love sewing with my favorite color...
    RED!

    My signature label...

    PINK POODLES!
    Ooo Lah Lah!

    Feit Avec Amour
    (Made With Love!)

    Vintage reproduction prints
add such a sweet old fashioned look to this little apron.

Instead of a tie...I chose to add a "scrunchy" that slips over the child's head.
It's so much softer on a little ones neck.

Thank you for spending time with me in my sewing room.

    I love to sew
I love sharing my latest projects
    and
I love blessing others with the work of my hands.

Have a wonderful week, my sweet friends!

    Blessings,
    Carolynn xoxo

  • Homespun Plaid

    Homespun Plaid

Ahhh...This is such a glorious time of year!
    Autumn Leaves...ORANGE, RED & GOLD...
    Plump Pumpkins, Colorful Gourds...
Kettles simmering with luscious Fall soups...
And, evenings spent by a crackling fire curled up with a good book.

I gathered Fall florals from my stash that I display year after year and encircled this lovely soup tureen.
I spied this white tureen while thrifting. It was only $2.25!
It was missing the ladle...but, I already have one.
The outer yellow accent was another thrifted find for $1.
    Tweaking is fun
    &
    Thrifty can be pretty!

    Red Welsh Cupboard
Knowing that my favorite color is red
my sweet husband gave me this wonderful cupboard.
I had fun adding pops of orange here and there.
I love collecting blueware and have several pieces.
    I'm not a dish snob.
My husband has brought me blueware from around the world
& I love mingling my thrifted and gifted pieces side by side.

I am a huge fan of " homespun plaids" . They add such a charming touch to any decor.
I simply measured the length of the table...Cut and then added a long overhanging ruffle to both ends.
I have admired the burlap table runners I have seen on my friend's blogs and wanted to make one, too.

My husband and I found this Harvest Table when we lived in Tennessee.
It came from a small country church in Dandridge, Tennessee.
    It's over 100 years old.
I can only imagine how many heartfelt prayers of thanksgiving
have been prayed around this wonderful old table.

My lovable feline, Zoey, had to do a little investigating.
Whenever I do any decorating she has to be right in the middle of everything...
Giving it her final sign of approval.
    >^^<

It makes me so happy knowing that you stopped by,
    my dear blogging friends!

I do hope you have a great week.

    Oscar Dresses Interpreted Into Rooms

I feel asleep! I cannot believe that I fell asleep during the Oscars. Boo! At least I dvr'd it but it is not the same. Anyway, I saw the red carpet and that is (almost) the most important part. I have my top three dresses and I will liken them to a room...

  • The Superbowl (for Women)

    The Superbowl (for Women)

Since Oscar fashions tend to represent the best of the runways and runways tend to influence interior design I thought I could get away with this post. Clearly metallics, "sparkles" and structure are the big trends and I am curious to see how that will translate to the home. Let's just hope companies won't start bedazzling lamp shades! But if they do, I will probably be blogging about how much I love them! ha! And I must admit that I am such a poser because I call myself a movie buff however, I have not seen one of the films that was nominated for best picture. Not...a...one. Seriously? What have I been doing all winter? Its like a banner year for movie making and I have been staying at home watching The Bachelor. Note to self: Get out more.

Anyway, here are my fashion comments (as if you care).
    HITS

    Kristen Stewart
This is a current take on a really classic look. I wish she just enjoyed wearing it more...she looked so uncomfortable!

    Rachel McAdams
I might be alone on this one but I think this dress is stunning. It looks like a watercolor. I like her hair this color, her makeup was flawless and I covet the earrings!

    Miley Cyrus
I cannot believe that she had on one of my favorite dresses.
I have never seen her look this good!

    Elizabeth Banks
I especially loved this color! But I wanted to rip that headband off her head. You're not 12.
Sorry girl, your crazy funny though!

    Maggie Gyllenhall
I am sure she will get slammed for this choice and I normally don't like prints but there was something about this dress. And it seemed very...her. She looked gorgeous!
    (As if I know her.)

    ON THE FENCE

    Charlize Theron
I know it is high fashion but I can't decide if I like this one or not. It did look like Stewart was behind her wearing lavender gloves and holding up her "girls." I kept waiting for him to step out.

    Sandra Bullcok
I was really hoping to love her's. It was her night. I totally lost it when she thanked her mom.

    Demi Moore
I liked it but maybe it is because it reminded me of my Peaches 'n Cream Barbie!

    MISSES

    Sarah Jessica Parker
I didn't like SJP's dress. But it did remind me a bit of this...

    Meryl Streep
I think Meryl stole her dress from the set of this movie...

    Jennifer Lopez
It looked like a used condom. I am sorry but it did. As did her's...

    Amanda Seyfried

    Zoe Saldana
I was excited to see her dress because I love her style but this just looks like unraveling brush fringe. I do not likey.

I also have a few general (and rather snarky) comments to make.

    1. Who was in charge of the backdrop for these photos? Shag red carpet and yellow roses along the ground? Eek.

    2. ABC couldn't get anyone better than Sherrie Shepherd and Cathy Ireland to host the pre-show?Clearly the were scraping the bottom of the barrel. Since I am probably next on the list, give me a call for the 83rd Oscars. I am happy to do it.

    3. Gabourey Sidibe IS precious.

    4. I know that Dentyne was a sponsor of the Oscars but I cannot stand to watch people talk with gum in their mouth. I bet all of their publicists were dying!

    5. Cheers to the John Hughes tribute! But is anyone else concerned with how old the Brat Pack looked? I am. Because that means that I am old. I mean heck, Robert Downey, Jr. was wearing Blue Blockers!

Ok, that is all. I am headed to Blockbuster...

    Cottage Tour

Welcome to "A Cottage Tour". Last weekend my sister and I had the fun of touring two charming beach cottages in the tiny village of Neskowin, Oregon. This little town is situated on the Oregon Coastbordering the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean.

The Kitchen is the Heart of the Home... so I thought it best to begin your tour in thiswarm and inviting room.

Our lovely cottage host, Janet, had baked up a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies for her guests to nibble on. Everything about this charming kitchen says, "Pull up a chair and sit for a while!"

Do you see the bright red cherries on that wonderful plate?

(Which just happens to be my favorite color!)

I loved the vintage touches that greeted meas I strolled from room to room.

Every room was full of colorful surprises...whimsy and wonderful antiques.

It has been a pleasure sharing Janet's Cozy Kitchen with you.
Be sure and pop in again...
I have more cottage touches to share in the coming days...

    Blessings, my sweet friends!
