MISS MOOX: Pet Peeves

  • Designer Pet Peeve: Chairs Half on Rugs

Designer Pet Peeve: Chairs Half on Rugs

Typically I like furniture to be all on the rug or all off the rug. I know you don't always have this luxury and sometimes you have to make do. But take a look at this photo below...

I really try not to criticize other designer's work and this really isn't a criticism because I think this room is SO SO lovely but OMG why can't those chairs just be like 6" forward so they are all the way on the rug? Does this bother anyone else? Maybe it was on purpose as they preferred it that way or perhaps an oversight during the photoshoot. As I said, this is just my opinion, so maybe it was not this particular designer's opinion. But I would have loved to see these chairs on the rug in this particular case as there seems to be plenty of room. [If the designer of this room happens to read this please don't be mad at me...I tip my hat to you...your work is stunning!]

  • Designer Peeve: "Curtains"

    Designer Peeve: "Curtains"

I cannot stand drapes that stop at the window sill! I call them "curtains" instead of "drapes." You will never hear me use the term "curtains" unless it is in a mocking tone. They remind me of capri pants and I cannot stand them either! (Sorry if this offends you) But no one and I repeat, no one looks good in capri pants. They stop at such an awkward place on your leg that it makes you look wider than you are and then people wear socks and shoes with them. Ugh.

    Case in point...

(Note: I exclude work-out pants from this argument.)

    See how awkward this looks?

Did they run out of fabric?

It feels like a Highlights Magazine puzzle to me...what is missing in this photo?

The exception is if the window is above a sink, desk, etc. and therefore cannot go to the floor. Like so...

And the fashion exception are Bermuda shorts...

In my opinion, drapes should go to the floor. Why? Because they elongate the room much like pants at the proper length elongate your legs. (Instead of chopping up the room with curtains or your legs with capri pants.) Make sense?

Now drapes can be slightly off the floor like 1/4" or 1/2"...

    Or they can puddle...

However, I don't recommend puddling drapes if you have kids, pet or allergies as they are a magnet for dust and pet hair and well, kids will just mess with them!

And if you move from one house to another and want to use the same drapes but they are too short, try adding a large section at the bottom in a coordinating color to make them the correct length. Like so...

    Ick.

See, I told you there would be more! Ok, so I am not a fan of towel bars. Pourquoi? a.) They aren't all that attractive 2.) They are annoying to use and c) Why take up so much wall space by displaying a wet towel? I much prefer a hook (preferably hung on or behind a door so it is out of sight). Keep dry towels folded on an attractive vanity/shelf or rolled up in a nice basket. They have that pretty etagere above, why not fold all those towels and keep them on there? Again, I'm just sayin'...

    Design Pet Peeve: No. One

I say "one" because I am sure there will more. Hopefully, I don't offend anyone...just putting it out there. I am not a fan of the whole let's play hopscotch with the bathroom mats. Try a large rug that covers the area instead.
