    A Perfect Match

I could not possibly be happier for two people that I do not actually know! But I am thrilled that Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent found each other, what a perfect match! I guess I mean aesthetically since once again, I do not actually know these people. lol Although I feel that following them on Instagram like a stalker makes us instant friends. I have talked about my Design Crush on both Nate and Jeremiah here and here. Anyway, here are some clips from their new L.A. home together as featured in Harper's Bazaar Magazine.

    Crazy Fan?

Well, I was looking for a specific image and got distracted by the brilliance of Kay Douglas so I thought I would share it with you fine people. To my knowledge this is all her work. Delight in it...

If she sounds familiar it's because I've talked about her here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here. Yes, I am completely aware that I might be entering restraining order status.

  • Design Crush: Angie Hranowsky

    Design Crush: Angie Hranowsky

Check out local designer, Angie Hranowsky, in the Instant Room portion of the latest House Beautiful!

I was shocked to realize that I have yet to do a post on this fab designer...I thought I already had as I am a HUGE fan of her work! Angie is a local designer and I love to see someone mixin' it up in such a traditional town like Charleston. She started her career as a graphic designer but added interior design to her ever growing repertoire after studying at Parsons in 2004. Since then her career has flourished with many clients throughout the Southeast and Midwest. Her work has been published in several trade magazines and as I have come to realize...I have been saving these images for my idea books way before I learned who she was! Cheers to you Angie! And if you like her work, check out the post I did on the Coastal Living Cottage House she designed in I'On last year or visit her website or her blog.

    Design Crush: Massucco Warner Miller

Melissa Warner, Julie Massucco, and Carrie Miller

The three principals each previously worked at top design firms in San Francisco and New York but they felt that their impact would be greater as a team. The result is Massucco Warner Miller Interior Design and Decoration- a group of highly skilled and experienced designers who each bring their unique style and energy to the table and truly enjoy working together. One of the draws of the trio, beyond their down-to-earth, friendly demeanor and upbeat style, is their ability to bring a freshness and vibrancy to projects ranging from elegantly detailed residences in Presidio Heights to handsome, modern spaces in West Hollywood, or mid century, kid-friendly homes in Seattle. Using classical motifs in a modern way, the designers work closely with their clients and craftspeople to achieve exceptional spaces that reflect their clients' personalities and lifestyles. -via their website.

  • Design Crush: Tia Zoldan

    Design Crush: Tia Zoldan

You might remember this feature from Cottage Living a while back. It is one of my all time favs! The designer is L.A. based Tia Zoldan who describes her work as classic with a bohemian edge. LOVE! She is a self professed art junkie and got her start in store design for J. Crew but left the corporate world to raise her two daughters. Her friends were so enamored with her style that they requested her design services, which eventually led her to start Zoldan Interiors in 2004.

I was thrilled to see that she has her own blog, The Roof Over My Head. A fellow blogger got a interview with her that you can check out here. She has since redecorated her home and shared with us some images on her website. I love to see how a designer's home evolves over time! Here is an updated photo of her living room.

It seems that her adorable children have inherited her passion for art. Look how stinkin' cute this photo is of her daughter creating a charcoal masterpiece...

    PRECIOUS!!!

  • Design Crush: Sarah Richardson

    Design Crush: Sarah Richardson

I gave up watching HGTV a long time ago since 99% of it is absolute crap but I saw Sarah's House while visiting with my parents and have now set my dvr to record all of these episodes. I have always liked her work and think it is a great (and actually realistic) approach to a design show. The show illustrates her selecting a home to purchase then renovating it and finally decorating it also so you can see the full process.

Sarah Richardson's background is in television production doing styling and set decoration. She now has a thriving design firm, four tv show's and several product lines including a line of paints and indoor and outdoor furniture. Sarah: Keep up the good work and I hope you are enjoying living me dream!

  • Design Crush: India Hicks

    Design Crush: India Hicks

When I grow up, I want to be India Hicks. I seriously covet every aspect of her life from her impeccable design genes and breath taking beauty to her amazing island home and laid back lifestyle to her adorable family...I mean look at this...

See. Now you want to be her too, don't you?

If you don't own this book, go get it pronto. Although it might make you super depressed if you are land locked.

  • Poser!

    Poser!

My friend/client/marketing expert (who is super talented if you need someone call her Eskimo Advertising) asked me for a picture of me in a room I have designed. I don't have one. But I use to work for this designer who I think has a photo of her in every room she has ever been in. (You know the type.) Well, I saw this photo in House Beautiful last night and just loved it. You go Thomas! Way to be cute, charming AND natural.

[Love the non-fussy, perfectly put together room!]

So what type of "poser" are you?
Here are some photos I have collected over the years of my design role models to help you decide.

Are you a diva who matches your outfit to the room?
[I kinda want to be this person. Is that wrong?]

Or are you classic and timeless?
This photo could have been taken 50 years ago and will probably look current in another 50 years.
    [Love that!]

Or are you relaxed and casual?
[Love animals in the photos! Shows a lived in home.]

Or are you a little bit witty?
[Eddie cracks me up...I am dying to know what is going through his head!]

I think Celerie does an excellent job of achieving all three: she is classic, she shows her personality, she is relaxed and she matches her interiors!
    [Well played Celerie, well played.]

  • Design Crush: Kelly Hoppen

    Design Crush: Kelly Hoppen

"Kelly Hoppen is a British interior designer, furniture designer, and author. Hoppen was born in South Africa but grew up in Chelsea, England. She was the daughter of Jewish-Irish fashion tycoon whose death at age 16 resulted in her "drop out period." Consequently, she started her career at age 17 and since then has built her brand. She is known for her neat, comfortable, yet oppulent style.

She has designed the Beckham`s LA home as well as the first class cabin`s for British Airways. Kelly is the first designer to receive the Andrew Martin “International Designer of the Year” award. She also has her own shops in both London and Dubai. According to the press, Kelly manages 30 projects in a year and will not take a project for less than £300,000 (that’s around $600,000 USD)." [Damn. That must be nice!]

I will never be this cool...

[This I pulled from an internet article and I cannot find the source. Please don't sue me. I did not write it, nor am I claiming to have written it! My apologies.]

  • Design Crush: Sara Gilbane

    Design Crush: Sara Gilbane

    Designer Sara Gilbane

If you are a fellow blogger/design enthusiast then you have undoubtedly read the current issue of Lonny. If you are not, go read it now. [Well, after you finish reading my blog please.] Featured is the home of NY Designer, Sara Gilbane. I have been reading about Sara for a while now and I am glad that she is finally getting some great press because she was one of the many set to be featured in Domino just before it folded (wawawa). In December, House Beautiful named her one of the "20 New Designers to Watch" and her phone hasn't stopped ringing since. [A problem I would be happy to have.] Looking for my phone number? You can find it here.

After years of studying under famed designer, Celerie Kemble, Sara finally decided to leave and start her own firm, Sara Gilbane Interiors. Like most designers these days, she mixes traditional style with modern and youthful pieces but in my opinion Sara's signatures are her use of color and her attention to detail. Sara stresses the importance of layering which allows her interiors to look lived in and as if they were accumulated over time versus staged for a photoshoot. That is something I totally agree with...rock on.

In her Lonny article, Sara is quoted as "having a crush on fabrics." If you saw my fabric closet (yes, I said fabric closet) then you would understand why I too have a crush on fabrics. Here are some of her designs and if you would like to hear more about Sara go read this interview by Marisa over at Stylebeat.

  • Design Crush: Lindsey Coral Harper

    Design Crush: Lindsey Coral Harper

Interior designer and University of Georgia alum (holla!), Lindsey Coral Harper, left South Georgia for The Big Apple and has been kicking the design world's ass ever since. Her resume includes an internship with Ralph Lauren in London, eight years working under famed designer Richard Langham and freelance work for Dorothy Draper, Inc. just to name a few! Images of her New York apartment have been blowing up the design websites/blogs and she was set to be featured in Domino just as the magazine folded...wa wa wa. But don't feel too sorry for her, when you are as talented as she is, you are bound to recover.

    Lindsey Harper's NY Apartment

Lindsey's sister and my sister-in-law are bff's so we have been hearing about each other for years but have yet to meet. I finally emailed her introducing myself and she was nice enough to take the time to answer some questions. So here goes...

After years of residing in NY (and abroad), do you think your southern roots have any influence in your designs? If so, in what ways?
ABSOLUTELY! I am Southern to the core, ask anyone who knows me...or ask me a question and you can hear it as I still have the accent. Or as my grandfather used to say, "we don't have an accent, the rest of the world does". One of the things I love about this city is that there is a huge southern contingency and we stick together. I actually have a large group of southern decorating friends and we refer to ourselves (and so do others) as the Southern Mafia. I do think being southern has had a huge influence on my life, the way I live and the way I design and decorate. I am big on comfort and I like most southerner's I love to entertain! I really try to get to know the client and figure out who they are and how they live so that I can make their house or apartment a welcoming and comfortable environment they really love to be in all the time. In the end it's really about lifestyle!

You have such talent for accessorizing and creating eye catching tablescapes. Any advice or rules of thumb you live by?
Why thank you! I do love my accessories. If anything I'm a maximalist not a minimalist. I love shopping, antiquing, flea markets, and junk stores. If an object catches my eye whether it's a great color or a wonderful shape, a bit odd or makes me laugh, I will usually buy it. A great accessory doesn't have to be expensive or "important". It just has to mean something to you. I also love to travel so I bring things home with me typically in my carry-on (I do not check my luggage) and then I have a little reminder of that place and that trip. Most of my accessories are really wonderful memories.

You clearly are not afraid of color! Where does your color inspiration come from? And are there any colors that you refuse to work with?
I certainly love color. Not sure why, but it just makes me happy. And if you think my apartment is colorful, you should see my closet!! Maybe because I'm a redhead, I had to deal with pairing colors and getting colors right from an early age. I also think my color confidence comes from working with RKL. He too admired color and wasn't afraid to use it. He trusted me to pick paint colors for him on several jobs in the beginning of my career there. A few years later I was specifying all the colors for all of my clients and big jobs, no questions asked. He was a huge risk taker and pushed me to think outside of the box. I also like to try new things and new colors!! There are so many great colors, textiles and color combinations out there...why do the same thing over and over?! The only color I'm really adverse to is white! I rarely do white walls. Unless you have a KILLER art collection, you are going to have to really beg me to give you white walls. If I do white walls look closely, they are probably a textured paper and will definitely be paired with an amazing hi-gloss colored ceiling! Don't you just love when a really well done hi-gloss ceiling looks like glass!

Lindsey also has an online shop, called Lamshop, with her bestie and business partner, Maggie Currey, which offers custom furniture, art and one-of-a-kind treasures. Lindsey said they are working on some new pieces incorporating fun elements like Shagreen, Tortoise, Malachite, and Faux Bois as well as some new jewel-inspired tables that are "very glam." I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next!!!

  • Design Crush: Ann Coyle

    Design Crush: Ann Coyle

Chicago based designer, Ann Coyle, fell into interior design after renovating her own apartment over twelve years ago. From there a new career was born. According to her bio, her style is described as "...based in classicism and symmetry, employing a mix of modern and traditional forms to create tension and contrast." Her unique use of color can be contributed to her self-professed “loving of the color of Sweettarts” which is quite apparent in her beautiful designs.

She has developed a line of upholstery, casegoods, mirrors and lighting and also sells some vintage furniture finds all of which are available on her website, www.annecoyleinteriors.com.

  • Design Crush: Tobi Fairley

    Design Crush: Tobi Fairley

    Love these headboards!

Love this painted bed (esp the color)!

Love everything-sunburst mirror, white and green color scheme, symmetry...

Love the simple yet elegant styling!

Love the art arrangement in the molding (or painted molding?)!

Love the mirrored insets on the cabinets!

I had to show this one again because it just makes me so happy! Anyone notice how the mirrors reflected in the coffee table look like eye lashses? Love that!

I don't know where I have been but I recently discovered designer Tobi Fairley's website and I was blown away! According to her biography, she is based in Arkansas but works on projects along the south from Charleston to Los Angeles (how fun!). Once I started searching her portfolio, I recognized many of her projects that I have tagged from shelter magazines. It also says she has been working on several product lines set to debut in 2010. Can't wait! You can follow her career, appearances and projects via her blog, go check it out!

  • Coastal Living Idea Cottage

    Coastal Living Idea Cottage

My friend Anne and I went to the Coastal Living Idea Cottage in I'On last week which was designed by a local designer, Angie Hranowsky. I think she did a phenomenal job! It is very simple and clean yet well styled.

The above artwork is (I assume) by Charleston artist, Molly B. Right and is made entirely of bottlecaps...truly amazing!

I dig the hardware throughout the house! The hardware in the master bathroom (below) is by Rocky Mountain and has such a wonderful aged patina. If you are local go see Whitney at Bird Hardware, to get yours!

  • Design Crush: Kay Douglas

    Design Crush: Kay Douglas

Another one of my design crushes is Kay Douglas owner of South of Market. If memory serves correctly, she fell into design after a trip to Europe where she bought so much stuff that she had to buy a container to get everything back to the states [my dream!]. This sparked her to open her store [ my dream!] and from there a design business grew.

Kay's design aesthetic is simple, clean lines with both French and Belgium influences. She is quoted in a House Beautiful article as saying "You know how some people are not comfortable with silence — they have to fill it up with words? The same can be said for a house. Some people think it has to be filled with stuff to be beautiful. It doesn't. That's what I think this style is all about." I dig that! Check out more on her House Beautiful article here.

Kay masters the look of mixing old industrial pieces with clean, modern lines brilliantly! Her stores (located in both Atlanta and Charleston) are filled with neutral linens, iron lanterns, old wood and/or metal furniture with occasional pops of colors in pillows or art. Like this...

Kay loves to repurpose objects like turning this simple industrial object into a piece of art.

Or this basket into a pendant light.

Coastal Living also featured her vacation home in Rosemary Beach, Florida. Take a look at some of these amazing photos!

Read more on Kay in this article featuring her Atlanta home in Traditional Home Magazine.

  • Design Crush: Tom Scheerer

    Design Crush: Tom Scheerer

I have such a major crush on Tom Scheerer! He is an amazing designer out of New York who creates beautiful interiors throughout the country as well as vacation homes in the islands. All of his designs look completely effortless! They are simple and uncluttered yet speak volumes. As I was going through his firm's website, I realized that many of the images I have pulled over the years and collected in my design inspiration books are creations of the famed designer. He masters something that I think all good interior designers strive to achieve which is to have no two spaces ever look the same yet still contain your signature. These are some of my personal favs but check out his full portfolio here http://www.tomscheerer.com/. Cheers to you Tom, can't wait to see what you create next!
