I have always liked the concept of letters (or numbers) in a nursery, I mean why not have art that is functional! Designer Sara Richardson did it right (above) by taking letters of different fonts, sizes and painting them all different colors and hanging them above a rail at the top of the ceiling. Bravo! And I don't mind seeing the child's name written on the wall but let's face it, this concept has been WAY over done (thanks Pottery Barn!). But I am really digging the concept of doing something outside the box with a name or the alphabet. Like the designers of formbaby.com did in their son's nursery below where she used stencils to paint the name on the wall in a glossy finish against the matt wall (or perhaps they are decals?) either way she nailed it!

I think stainless letters/numbers would be cool and give the nursery a modern edge.

This custom made artwork is cute too!

I have always wanted to find vintage blocks and hang them on a wall, maybe in a large grid?

Anyone have any other "outside the box" types of ideas they have done or seen? Not creative? No worries. I did an etsy.com search and found some cute stuff out there and all you have to do is buy in and hang it on your wall!

    Art For The Kiddies

I am helping a client with her daughter's room and due to my unnatural obsession with Barbie, I thought it could be cute to incorporate something from the doll icon as art. Well if you want to see some crazyass sh*t, search etsy.com for "Barbie Art"! Holy crap. It will take a while to get some of those images out of my head! But there is also some super cute stuff from the alphabet to wall decals to painted canvases so let me show you some of that instead...

  • Who Knew Something So Small Could Come With So Much Stuff?

Who Knew Something So Small Could Come With So Much Stuff?

For those of you that don't know me or have just started reading, I am an interior designer AND a professional organizer (weird pairing?...perhaps). As far as blogging goes, I have been spreadin' the design love but have neglected the organizing love a bit. Soooo, one of my goals for this new year is to make every Wednesday an "organizing" themed post. I plan to show inspiring images of organized spaces, provide organizing tips, illustrate do-it-yourself organizing projects, feature some of my personal organizing projects as well as my client's and much more. But I need your help! Let me know if there is anything specific that you would like me to blog about...just leave me a comment or shoot me an email sidney@eclectic-idg.com. Thanks in advance for your help!

Today, I want to show some creative ideas for storing kid's toys. I know there are a million types of "kid themed" baskets, bins, etc. out there but why not do something a little more stylish? Take some cues from these inspiring images...

I find that the earlier you start training your kids to stay organized, the more likely they are to maintain the order. And be sure to make the organizing process kid friendly-incorporate labels with pictures (instead of words) from their favorite book. Or better yet, have them draw out the images for the various bins like trains, books, dolls, etc. so they will feel a sense of entitlement in their space! Are your kids still resisting? Try making it fun for them...create a game to see who can pick up their stuff the fastest every night before bedtime. Whoever wins gets a gold star. The child with the most gold stars at the end of each month earns a prize (money for their piggy bank, TV privileges, a special day out with mom or dad, etc. ) And with that I say...GOOD LUCK!
(Remember, I don't have children so I can suggest all of these things with ease.)

  • Displaying Your Child's Artwork

    Displaying Your Child's Artwork

No budget for art? Well there might just be a budding artist in your own home! I love to display the chillin's artwork in my client's homes. It is such a personal touch and it makes the little one's feel so special! Even though I am not a parent, I know that the AMOUNT of artwork one child produces can get out of control so best to have a rotating display. And this article from Real Simple gives some helpful hints on sorting, storing and (ahem) discarding your child's artwork.

A Tack Strip (doesn't ruin your walls!)

Acrylic Box Frames (easy to change out!)

A gallery wall of matching frames. (Makes art look sophisticated!)

I had this bulletin board custom made for a client covered in linen to match the bench in the mudroom and finished off with nailheads and a gallery light to add to the "true artist" effect!

Other idesas: you could decoupage (yes, I said decoupage) artwork onto a large canvas for an abstract effect, use a clothesline which is very simple to change out, paint a wall (or section of a wall) with magnetic paint and attach artwork with bulldog clips. Have another idea, let me know!
